Mildred Pierce is a five-part mini-series due to premier Sunday night by HBO on this Sunday March 27 2011.

Adapted from James M. Cain’s 1941 novel of the same name,  it is directed by Todd Haynes and stars Kate Winslet in the title role, alongside Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood.   Carter Burwell  has written the original score for the series.

The series stars Winslet as a divorcee and single mother attempting to make ends meet while gaining her daughters’ respect during the Great Depression. Joan Crawford starred in the 1945 film also based on the book and snagged a best actress Oscar — her only Academy Award — for the role.

Oscar-winner Melissa Leo,  plays Mildred’s friend Lucy Gessler and Evan Rachel Wood, who stars as Mildred’s disgusted and rebellious daughter, Veda Pierce.  Morgan Turner plays the younger version of Veda, while Quinn McColgan plays Pierce’s younger daughter, Ray. Their father Bert Pierce is played by Brian O’Byrne.

PLOT: In a land where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime, trouble is brewing. From the scheming south and the savage eastern lands, to the frozen north and the ancient Wall that protects the realm from the darkness beyond, two powerful families are engaged in a deadly cat-and-mouse game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

As betrayal, lust, intrigue and supernatural forces shake the four corners of the Kingdoms, their bloody struggle for the Iron Throne will have unforeseen and far-reaching consequences.

Plus Treme is returning in April. Another good show with some great music. Maybe that’s why True Blood was pushed back to July. Although I loves me some True Blood and I just die for Eric I can wait since there’s a lot of good stuff from now until then.
