‘The Big C’ Season finale: Taking The Plunge

Posted by ImaJustSaying on November 16, 2010

My Son, My Son

This is the first season of ‘The Big C’ and I was not so sure of how this show would pan out.

Cathy Jamison is a reserved, stifled, Minneapolis schoolteacher who receives life changing news and decides, from that moment on, to make drastic, long-overdue adjustments to the way she is living her life. She’s always been conservative and structured – the perfect suburban wife and mother who can’t decide how to buy a couch and is stifled by the decision – but Cathy is tired of being ‘the sensible one.’ Now she wants to let her freak flag fly. For the first time in her life, she is going to make choices that suit her needs. Who says you can’t eat desert as an appetizer? Time is precious, and Cathy is grabbing life by the balls…

Cathy decides by a matter of circumstance to befriend a neighbor who in fact halted her building a pool and Cathy somehow retrieves the stick up Marlene’s ass long enough to become friends and realize that Marlene is a widow and suffers from separation anxiety from her husband who learned to be the most crotchety ol lady on the block.

Cathy has had many revelations in this season and spends an inanimate amount of time trying to connect with her teenage son who we know as viewers that once you present yourself as a doormat, it’s over.

SHe doesn’t tell anyone about her diagnosis and decides to live life to the fullest at NO COST!!.

She tries many a time to tell her husband her health issues but always her behavior has her husband spilling some other kind of issue that stops her.

Marlene and Cathy become best friends and we find out that Marlene has Alzheimer’s and evidently she looses her marbles at events and places and this becomes a problem.  Marlene takes matters in her own hands..

I will miss you Marlene

I really loved this character and I am sad to see her go.  Marlene brought some “Snap Out Of It” much-needed moments to this show and she will be sorely missed.

Geeze, I could of done without Marlene zexy times in the Diner with the sex only suitor or the scene in the male strip club.  Old Ladies should not be that excited for peen.

Did I tell you how much I love Oliver Platt?  Yes I love Laura Linney but I fell in love with Oliver when he did ‘Bicentennial Man’  His characters are always so loving and a huge pillow to fall on.

It wasn’t so strange to me that when Cathy and Paul where finally telling their son Adam of Cathy’s illness and the new treatment she planned on pursuing had no real impact on the son.  They speak to him like a kindergarten and he responded like a kindergarten.  Can I have money?  Can I go to my friend’s house?  Do you have cotton candy?

Now Cathy is in the hospital for a weeks treatment and Adam tried to raid her pocket-book in the kitchen (left behind) for money and found an envelope, with a key (to the storage facility) and treks over for a look-see, finds the storage unit with all his future birthday, graduation and Christmas gifts for the next few years and it polarized the child after a few minutes of the realization that his mother is stockpiling future gifts that she may not be around to buy and being diligent on being proactive cause thats how she rolls…..

When Andy broke down after the true awareness of his mother’s illness,  I had the ugly cry.  The cry that I am SO glad no one is around to witness my ugly cry.  My sobs come from below and they rumble like bad gas on the horizon.. you try to butt clench the cheeks.. and to no avail.. IT RIPS!!  A really sad ugly cry.  sigh…

(End Scene not so pretty)

**Update:  HBO has given the green light for a season 2

Adam is the one untouched soul in this dilemma. I found it typical that he’s the last to know. Still, he’s no child and should have been told the (near) whole truth. But how do you tell your kid I’m going thru a procedure that may kill me in my desire to live? I wept like a school girl during the storage unit scene. Who knows what is right unless and until you live it?

I, too will miss Darlene, though I expect she’ll make ghostly appearances nest season. At least I hope so.

As to Sean? At least he bathed. lol.

    • THANK GOD SEAN BATHED!! I coulda sweared I smelled the losa.

I so agree about Adamn. I truly balled my eyes out for a kid that was not properly prepared. But yet I agree with you.. how do you prepare your child without spooking him. Its a double edged sword. I also agree its a persons right and i dont at all critisize Cathys method. to tell. not to tell. when to tell. its all a persons own deal and not mine. I love the show how they show both sides of the argument. really smart.

Again.. I am glad Sean bathed… even my nose hairs where burning..

    • Thanks Squirrels for commenting!!! hope to see you round these parts soon partner!!

    Great recap, IJS! Hi, Squirrels!

I love this show. I did the ugly cry, too, at the storage unit scene. Mostly because her wrapping job with cancer is way better than me fully refreshed after 10 hours sleep. Made me add “learn how to wrap gifts nicely” to my bucket list. In all seriousness, that was a tragic scene.

So did she die when she got the interferon or was it just a near death experience or a dream? There is going to be a season 2, right?
